10 Best Tips To Avoid Acne Outbreaks

Some of us may be blessed with flawless skin and never have acne woes. In our hot, humid climate, many of us with oily/combination skin tend to have pimples, especially when it’s our time of the month. Here are some tips on how to prevent Acne outbreaks:

Tip #1: Use Skin Care Products

For those with acne-prone skin, products containing AHAs, salicylic acid, and benzoyl peroxide will help to improve acne. Be careful not to overdo nor use too many products containing the above as this can cause the skin to be too dry and irritate the skin causing Acne Outbreaks.

Tip #2: Wash Your Hair Daily

If you notice your Acne Outbreaks tend to be near the hairline or on the forehead, it may be partly contributed by the hairstyle (individuals with bangs may experience more forehead pimples/acne) or hair products. As much as possible, try to shower and shampoo before going to bed every night as our hair can collect dust/debris through the day and this can be transferred to the pillow.

Tip #3: Change Linens Weekly

Change your bed linens regularly, ideally once a week. When your pillowcase isn’t laundered or changed regularly, a build-up of dirt or oil from the environment as well as your skin and hair touching the pillow is transferred back onto your skin. This can clog pores and cause blemishes and acne. Dirty sheets are also loaded with bacteria that can cause your skin’s immune system to become overwhelmed and increase the chances of Acne Outbreaks.

Tip #4: Know Your Acne Triggers

Know your Acne Outbreaks triggers. Everyone’s acne triggers can be different, ranging from lack of sleep to stress, dietary habits, and skincare products. Often, it tends to be multifactorial. Finding out what your trigger is takes time, so monitor yourself and look out for lifestyle patterns that may cause your acne.

Tip #5: Drink More Water

Hydrate. Skin dehydration potentially contributes to acne as our sebum glands produce more sebum in an attempt to keep our skin hydrated. Generally, adults should drink between 5 and 8 glasses of water every day, and even more, if needed.

Tip #6: Cleanse Your Face

Cleanse your skin before and after working out/exercising. It is ideal to exercise with bare skin as some makeup can potentially clog our pores and mixing sweat with makeup is not beneficial for our skin. After working out, cleansing our face helps to remove excess oil and dirt in our pores and is especially important for those with back acne to prevent bacterial build-up which in turn leads to pimple formation and Acne Outbreaks.

Tip #7: Use Facial Tissues Instead

Use facial tissues instead of a face towel. Face towels tend to accumulate dirt/dust/debris as we leave them out to dry. Facial tissues, in comparison, tend to be more hygienic for acne-prone skin types.

Tip #8: Wipe Your Handphones & Headphones

Wipe down your handphones/headphones regularly. Handphone screen surfaces and headphones accumulate sweat/dust/dirt which potentially gets transferred to our faces. Disinfecting with an alcohol swab at appropriate intervals is recommended, especially for those who notice they tend to have pimples or Acne Outbreaks at the sides of their faces.

Tip #9: Find Non-comedogenic, Non-acnegenic & Oil-free Products

Look for products that are non-comedogenic, non-acnegenic, oil-free. This means that the products will not cause comedones or acne, especially important for products such as sunblock. Consider Heliocare’s 360degree oil-free gel touch that is ideal for sensitive, acne-prone skin with its anti-microbial, alcohol-free and non-comedogenic properties.

Tip #10: Seek Treatment

For those with moderate to severe Acne Outbreaks, consider seeing a certified doctor for treatment options which range from topical applications to aesthetic treatments and oral medication. For those with acne scars, treating active acne is important to break the vicious cycle.
